Voices from the Margins
Voices from the Margins evolved from a writing residency that Paul Howard undertook with Matthew 25 Mission Eastbourne as part of his MA in Creative Writing at the University of Brighton. The purpose of the placement was to seek inspiration for his own writing and to encourage others to share their stories in written or oral form.
From the outset, Paul’s hope was that we would accumulate sufficient material to produce a book, the sale of which would benefit the charity. Whereas the formal course requirement was for a placement of about eight weeks, the ambition to publish an anthology resulted in the residency continuing for several months.
When Paul was not able to complete the work needed for the book, due to other responsibilities, Lesley Dawson took over collecting material from guests and added a section on the experiences of the many M25M volunteers. The motivations for volunteering at “the Mission” are many and varied. Some volunteers see what they do as an outworking of their Christian faith, as something that Jesus would have done, inspired by the parable in the 25th chapter of Matthew’s gospel. others have humanitarian motives for doing the same work, such as concern for their fellow man, and for some volunteering is a response to the help they and their families have received from the Mission and seeing this work as a way of giving back to the community. How Far is it to Bethlehem?Lesley Dawson lived and worked in the West Bank and Gaza Strip between 1988 and 1999. She headed up the team that developed and ran degree programmes in physiotherapy and occupational therapy at Bethlehem University and a short spell in Gaza at the UNRWA College of Nursing. As a result of these projects and an interest in Biblical sites, she travelled widely in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
“Some of the stories in this book are personal, some are about other people I met, others are stories I heard and some are more than one story put together. All are based on a certain amount of truth, some more than others. Some names represent actual people, and some are figments of the author’s imagination. All stories are based on my time working and living in the Middle East – some are about situations in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and others are based in Israel. I leave the reader to decide which stories are which. Stories represent the complexities of life for all who live there and pose questions but provide no answers. A Chinese proverb says “May you live in interesting times” we certainly did.”

Living through the Covid-19 pandemic posed a particular problem for the writers of fiction, namely how to create work in a world which seemed to have risen ready made from the genre of dystopian fiction. Strangers in Paradise
Bourne to Write’s first anthology – ‘Strangers in Paradise’, featuring the work of 26 Bourne to Write writers was launched at the Eastbourne Arts Festival at The Lamb in Old Town Eastbourne in May 2014. All proceeds from the book have been donated to local charities, including the Eastbourne Pier Benevolent Fund.
